Crossed Volume 1 Avatar

Title: Crossed Volume 1

Publisher: Avatar Comics

Crossed where it all began, the original concept work from Garth Ennis.  If you have been reading my blog I love this blokes work and have not found anything yet that I did not like what he has done.

A fairly standard dystopian world scenario, group of survivors fighting against the odds a backdrop of futuristic virus zombie apocalypse etc.  However something like the walking dead is a girl guides walk in the park compared to the hell that the Crossed unleash.

The Crossed are not simply mindless eating machine fulfilling an unstable lust for brains, they are people who still have some vestige of what they were before, but when they have the virus they lose all inhibition and control.

You also get introduced to Horsecock, a crossed who likes to kill with, yes you guessed it, and his group of wandering killers & rapists.

This is not for those who are easily offended, hell it’s not for those who get squeamish or for anyone under 18.

Where have I been???

Have been away for a few months and the main reason no more comics reviewed has been this Facebook group.

Get Comics UK, I have been on there selling since January and my comics have been going great so time has been at a premium, even for just reading a comic let alone reviewing one.
If you are a seller or looking for cheap comics under £2 then check it out there are loads on sale, and unlike other Facebook groups doesn’t seem to have time wasters who want things for next to nothing or request things then never hear from again.

I have combined this with downgrading my time on pinterest.  I find that site a complete waste of time now since they changed the format.  I mean why do i care that so and so has pinned a picture of a cat, when I can’t find people who want to join a community board I run.

I have also been doing a bit with a hashtag for my comics as in #comics4sale so if on twitter, google+ or Facebook check it out.

If you want to join Get Comics UK then simply go through the link.

My store on ebid now has Manga as well as 7000 UK and US comics for sale, come over and check out Boarder Comics @ ebid & Facebook.

Poizon Demon Hunter #1 EH & London Night Comics

Title: Poizon Demon Hunter #1

Publisher: EH & London Night

Comics published for the mature reader with the hint of flesh and sex.  18 pages of comic and about 10 pages of adds.

In all honesty I expected a bit more as the first couple of pages are interesting then jumps to a college group camping and the only raunchy part of the comic is the cover.  The artwork is not my cup of tea, I generally love the black & white of manga, but this seems too heavy and drawn childlike.  Thick lines, very little subtlety and reminds me of Viz.

Sorry to say not a comic I will pursue for myself, but the subject matter does suggest there could be vast improvement in the story.

Maybe London Night need to concentrate on their stories and not trying to suggest that it is filled with adult content.  The ideas are there and I hate being negative, but c’mon work on your stories or you end up like the games market all graphics and no gameplay.

Full Metal Fiction #1 London Night

Title:  FMF #1
Publisher: London Night Comics

A taster comic containing 4 characters released by London Night.

The first chapter is Razor, a crime fighter who shreds limbs off gangsters is Queen City.  A decent start and did make me want to find Razor comics to see what the story holds.

2nd chapter is Arvonia, to be honest the art work was so scratchy and hard to follow I gave up, colour would defiantly help this shapeshifter story.

3rd chapter was Killing Machine, same as Arvonia bad artwork drawn almost childlike couldn’t even get into the story.

Last Chapter was Sade, read the lot, but the story never really took off in this edition, but interesting enough too look at more.

The artwork on all 4 stories reminded me of 2000ad, some is brilliant other artists I wouldn’t look at twice.  I hate scratchy overworked scenes that is why HOTD doesn’t work in Manga but the Anime is brilliant.

London Night are pushing the big boobs naked women covers, but if you are looking for sex and eroticism then there was none in this title. maybe they should have invested a bit more in some of the characters than worrying about fetish.  Still worth having a look at though.

Golden Orbit Comic, Sci Fi & Card Fair

Leeds Golden Orbit Comic Fair

3rd December

Leeds Town Hall, The Headrow, Leeds LS1 3AD

If in the Leeds area then check this fair out, they have between 10 to 20 comic dealers who sell a huge range of different comics from the cheap Indies to Golden Age DC etc.
Have gone to the ones they have in Liverpool and Manchester, from what I understand the Leeds fair is about the size of Manchester.
Really cheap to go in and there are comic prices to suit all budgets.
This is truly a comic fair, so don't go in cosplay.
For further information check out their website, Golden Orbit.

The Coven #1 Awesome Comics

Title: The Coven #1
Publisher: Awesome Comics

The Coven a group of magical beings with a range of paranormal/supernatural powers.  A decent read, however it looks to start 3 stories in the 1, and 2 are just that a start, you don’t get to experience what any of the other 2 story parts are about at all.

A good start however for ‘the coven’ themselves, a quick bit of action and you establish the good guys from the bad ones.  Has a bit of an X-Men feel, but unlike those characters these ones are possessed priest, vampires and those touched by the hand of Cain.

A darker storyline, but one with much more interest and possibility than the superhero sagas, and enough hint at nudity to keep any teenager plus interested.  Characters like this can literally fight their inner demons, instead of moaning about them.

Well worth checking out.

Cinder & Ashe #1 DC

Title: Cinder & Ashe #1
Publisher: DC

A gun for hire duo who solve problems in A -Team fashion.  However unlike Hannibal and co. this is a far more gritty tale of an ex Vietnam Vet from the French Quarter and Vietnamese street orphan.

A good read, doesn’t try to hide the dirt and desperation of the war and it’s consequences on ordinary people, but doesn’t lull into a full on tale of woe either.  After reading this I will be on the lookout for the other titles in the mini series.

I was surprised at the graphic nature of some of the events in a DC title, but well done to them for not trying to sugar coat this story, or try to turn it into a superhero tale (it may still do but don’t think so).

Written by Gerry Conway who has worked on loads of main stream comics, defiantly has become a writer I will look out for.
